Remembering Dennis Nikols - President Retread Resource Ltd.
Dennis Nikols, President of Retread Resources Ltd., passed away suddenly on Thursday March 21, 2013 at the age of 69 years.Dennis was born in Chicago and obtained his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin. He had a successful career in geology spanning from 1969 to present. He was a Field Geologist for Phelps Dodge Corp. of Canada from 1969-1971, a Geological Consultant for Val d’Or, Quebec from 1971-1973, a Mine Geologist for Wabush Mines, Wabush, Labrador from 1973–1977, a Planning Engineer / Geologist for Sherman Mine, Temagami, Ontario from 1977-1980, a Geology Specialist / Mining Specialist with TransAlta Utilities Corporation, Calgary, Alberta from 1981-1987, the Section Head (Manager) of the Coal Geology and Industrial and Metallic Minerals Sections and Alberta Geological Survey with Alberta Research Council, Edmonton, Alberta from 1987-1992 and the President of Retread Resources Ltd., Sherwood Park / Calgary, Alberta from 1992 to present. Dennis authored and co-authored numerous reports and journal articles, seminar papers, guidebook articles, poster and oral presentations on mine planning, resource assessment, coal geology, coalbed methane resources, geophysical applications and environmental geology.
In his spare time, Dennis enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, hiking, camping, gardening, cooking and photography. His remarkable photos can be found on his website at www.asifoundit.com. Dennis was very generous with his time volunteering in the community. He was the President of the Cedarbrae Community Association, Chairman of Results for Speed Skating at the 15th Winter Olympic Games in Calgary in 1988, a group committee and leader for Cubs, Scouts and Venturers, and held various positions with a number of amateur sport, charitable and community organizations.
Dennis was predeceased by his parents Tom and Lou, and his second wife Christine. He will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his wife Barbara; daughter Zoe (Richa); son Jason (Melinda); grandchildren Matthew, Layla, Claire, Olivia and Quinn; great-granddaughter Arianna; sister Margo (Mike); nieces Michelle and Jennifer and their families; as well as numerous friends. Family, friends, and those he has mentored over the years will remember Dennis and cherish the time they spent with him. The family would like to thank the staff on the 11th floor of the Foothills Hospital for their help, kindness and compassion.
